Safer Streets for Kirkwood is a grass roots cross section of citizens focused on improving the safety & efficiency of our Transportation Network for all users of all abilities & ages.
We are identifying & raising awareness of outdated, unsafe & dangerous street design processes being currently used by the City of Kirkwood that are jeopardizing the safety & economy of all citizens in our Kirkwood community & region.
We are providing proven solutions that include utilizing Street Design Guidelines Best Practices at NACTO. org. These guidelines provide proven street design guidelines that have been successfully implemented in cities across the United States, that most importantly vastly improves safety for All Users in the Infrastructure of the Transportation Network. Implementation of the above best practices, has decreased Pedestrian & Vehicular injuries and deaths. This has also resulted in measurable improvement to the amount of economic development and retail sales in the majority of of cities who have utilized said best practices. Furthermore these best practices have been utilized to implement successfully proven Safe Routes to Schools across the Country. It is our goal to implement a Successful, Sustainable Safe Routes to Schools Program in Kirkwood so every child in the District can walk or bike, to and from school everyday, SAFELY.

Education and raising awareness about the importance of implementing A Complete Streets Ordinance at social events, and providing access to resources and information about the Street Design, Best Practices NACTO.org that improves the safety of our Streets and Infrastructure throughout Kirkwood.
We promote the development and implementation of an Ordinance that includes the (10 elements)required for the success of a Complete Streets Ordinance to be implemented effectively in Kirkwood.
This implements street design best practices, that ensure streets are safer for people of all ages and abilities, balance the needs of different modes, and support local land uses, economies, cultures, and natural environments.
We believe that the streets of our cities and towns must allow all people, regardless of age, ability, income, race, or ethnicity, to safely, comfortably, and conveniently access homes, employment centers, schools, shops, health facilities, and other destinations by foot, bicycle, public transportation, car, or truck. A community’s street network should reflect the current and planned built environments and support overall public and economic health.
To mobilize and sustain Kirkwood’s implementation of a Complete Streets Ordinance, utilizing best practices, the Coalition pursues collaborative efforts that will embrace established local and nationally recognized successful implementation campaigns.
